Maria's Photograph

cover.jpg

She sees your fears. She knows your deepest darkest secrets.

A good old fashioned ghost story. In 1946 young widowed School teacher Judith moves to Norfolk to make a new start. Feeling lost and alone in a scary new place she finds solace in talking to a photograph, which was in her home when she arrived. Soon she starts to dream of the girl in the picture who seems to be trying to give her a message. In the visions, the girl Maria is obsessed with the school claiming she wasn't allowed to go there. Teaching assistant Jen tells Judith to get rid of it, explaining that the previous was driven mad by the picture and killed herself. When Thomas a troubled Seven-year-old tells Judith he is playing a girl nobody can see she takes him under her wing only to raise suspicions that his family has links to the girl in the photograph. Does the weird but much-loved headmaster know something he isn't telling? As the deadliest winter in Brittish history sets in children from the village start to disappear. Going in search, Judith and her newfound friends are trapped in the dark. No torches, no phone's no help on the way, and a violent angry ghost following them. But is the Photograph really what she seems? Pre-order to be terrified in this heart-warming horror story.

A heartfelt head trip

A Mid-Winter Night’s Dream is a story unlike any I have read before. The main narrative follows the relationship of Kat and Rob - two young people who are wholly inexperienced in the realm of love. Their romance survives for many years and is incredibly sweet and sentimental. A decent ways into the story, a twist is revealed that forces you to reconsider everything you thought you knew. It’s pretty trippy and gives the book a more cerebral tone. But if romance is your thing, don’t worry. That element remains strong throughout.

An intriguing story and author to watch out for!

Samuel  White's first novel is a very interesting read. Layers of reality, fantasy and dreams relating to the two main characters are interposed so, before too long, the reader is wondering about the course of the main narrative. Wondering, rather than confused, because the plot is always there but often hidden in a way that makes you question "What happens next?"
It was well worth the £3 outlay. Best wishes to the author for his next publication.
